Our aim is to develop the children’s numeracy skills, their understanding and concept of number. We want the children to be confident when approaching calculations independently selecting appropriate mental or written strategies. Alongside this, the children learn to use and interpret a range of tables, charts and graphs and develop their concept of shape, space and measures. Through each of these strands the children employ and extend their skills in problem solving and investigation, often in real life contexts. We base our planning on the National Curriculum, adapting it appropriately to children’s needs.

Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1

We begin with the development of a value of number, counting objects, ordering the numbers and the combination of more than one number. Work is grounded in practical tasks, moving gradually towards written recording and larger numbers. We encourage, through the learning of basic facts and number bonds, more complex calculations. The children explore shape, measuring and the presentation and interpretation of tables and charts. Throughout, there is a strong emphasis on developing the children’s mental dexterity with numbers and concepts.

Lower Key Stage 2

Children are introduced to larger numbers, and their knowledge of different calculation strategies is extended. Links between the four number operations are made, and they are applied to more complex problems. Concepts of shape, space and measure are further developed, and the children are introduced to a range of simple graphs. Mental speed and agility are increased, with multiplication tables being taught regularly and tested and other important facts learned by heart.

Upper Key Stage 2

Higher level numeracy skills are developed at this stage, including calculation with decimals. The use of the calculator is taught alongside experience in estimation and handling of numbers. Children use and interpret a range of graphs and perform statistical calculations. Concepts and skills in measurement, shape and space are further extended. Mental mathematics features regularly, and multiplication tables are taught and tested. Experience is given in the solving of problems of number investigations. The emphasis throughout is on a thorough grounding in the subject, both in number and practical experience. At whatever level of attainment, we aim that the children are confident in the subject, ready for their transition to Secondary School.
